The Carl Sandburg College baseball team grabbed an early lead before dropping a 9-7 decision at Illinois Central in a nine-inning contest Wednesday night.

Key Moments
- The Chargers’ first five batters of the game reached as Sandburg scored four first-inning runs. Braedon Blackford (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) and Noah Hoepfner (East Moline, Ill./United Township) each reached on errors, and Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie) singled to left for a 1-0 lead. Cacey O’Brien (Moline, Ill./Moline) followed with a two-run double to right, and he scored on an infield single by Tyler Womack (Moline, Ill./Moline) to make it 4-0.
- A six-run third inning gave ICC the lead for good at 8-4 as the Cougars took advantage of five walks, a hit batsman and two Sandburg errors. ICC’s big inning came despite picking up just one hit.
- O’Brien walked with two outs in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but Hunter Darst (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) struck out to end the contest.
Sandburg Standout
Freshman Kyler Edelman (Gridley, Ill./El Paso-Gridley) threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Chargers. The lefty came on in the seventh and struck out three while allowing just one hit. He threw 19 of his 27 pitches for strikes.
